According to a 200-page study by the University of Central Florida traffic engineer
Haitham Al-Deek, each fatal Wrong-way crash in Florida cost on average $6.6 million and those

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Highway Special Investigation Report -
Wrong-way crashes are a serious concern because they are much more likely to result in fatality or serious injuries. The report states that on average about 360 lives are lost each year In the USA. The report states that possibly many as three-quarters, of wrong way drivers are impaired by alcohol and that wrong way collisions occur more frequently at night, 78 percent of fatal wrong way crashes occurred between 6PM and 6AM.
K-DOT installed lights in October 2013 in both Neosho and Allen County at two U.S. 169 road interchanges making Kansas the first state to use the self-sufficient solar powered LED pavement lights to illuminate rural interchanges and intersections.
K-DOT Project Manager Chris Pross says it helps drivers see where they’re going.
“We quickly realized they won’t be able to replace overhead Lights,” said Pross. “But they will work very, very well in situations where the rural interchanges don’t have enough traffic volume.”
The solar lights, so far, have shown they can survive extreme weather conditions.
Crews installed 600 lights along the road ways and only two have failed to work due to the harsh winter.
K-DOT reports they’ve gotten good feedback from those driving in foggy conditions, compared to standard overhead lights. The new system also has the potential of preventing accidents.
“We for-see that these are going to be extremely beneficial for people that have those issue where there’s no pavement markings to show you where to turn, these can provide that guidance,” said Pross.
